Does your health cover need its own check-up?

18 July 2011 - 4:19pm

We rely on doctors to give us regular check-ups to make sure we are healthy and to keep abreast of any emerging needs - so why not apply the same process to your private health cover policy?

Your health situation naturally changes over time for a whole host of reasons.

Some changes are expected to come with age, while others may catch you by surprise.

These could be anything from a sports injury to needing glasses - or even an unexpected diagnosis or the onset of a chronic condition.

As new needs arise, the best thing you can do is to give your private health insurance a quick assessment to see if it is adequately catering for your requirements.

Checking your health insurance policy on an annual basis can help you to re-evaluate whether you have the cover you need.

This can involve looking at extras benefits, or perhaps considering different cover that better suits your budget.

It's entirely possible that there may be a policy that better suits your individual requirements - and your budget.

And it's not just changes to your health that should prompt you to reassess your cover - a number of other natural milestones can have an impact on your needs too.

If you get married or have a child, your health insurance needs to properly reflect your new situation.

For example, you may decide that a family or couples policy cover offers you better value - your insurance broker can help you evaluate the pros and cons of each policy and help you choose one that best suits your needs.
