Private health insurance - reducing costs

8 September 2011 - 2:03pm

Shopping around is one of the best ways to ensure you get a private health insurance policy that suits your family's needs, according to one spokesperson.

During an appearance on Channel 7's Sunrise, Ingrid Just of CHOICE asserted that with thousands of different health insurance options to choose from in Australia, people should take time to find the cover that best suits their needs.

As health needs can differ considerably over time - for example, starting a family or planning for retirement - it is important to check your policy annually to ensure your cover still suits your specific situation.

Just suggests reviewing your policy each year before it expires - and if it is no longer appropriate for your requirements, it may be worth switching either your level of cover or your provider.

Of course, most Australians are also concerned about costs. Just notes that one of the best ways to save money is to carefully evaluate your extras cover and only choose the ones you think you will actually use.

For example, active families may find it useful to opt for cover that includes chiropractic or sports injury treatment, while those who are more inclined to choose natural or alternative treatment may instead wish to include massage or acupuncture as part of their extras.
