Australians need to focus on lung health

11 October 2011 - 5:21pm

Medical experts have joined forces with a number of local celebrities to raise awareness of lung health in Australia.

Show Us Your Lungs! is an initiative of The Australian Lung Foundation which aims to convince people to pay more attention to an oft-ignored bodily system.

Australian actor John Jarrat says: "The impact of lung disease in Australia is enormous. Having seen the statistics, I decided to get involved and warn people not to ignore the signs."

The organisation cites the results of a Newspoll study - revealing that 43 per cent of Australians over the age of 35 report experience symptoms of lung disease - as a clear indicator of the need for increased awareness.

A number of lung diseases are treatable and the earlier they are detected - the better.

Private health insurance can assist in the hospital treatment of some of these conditions - including lung cancer.

The new campaign has adopted a cheeky approach to raising awareness, covering television, radio and online platforms.

The organisation urges anyone who feels breathless, has regular chest infections or suffers from a persistent cough to consult their doctor.
