Construction has started on the new Midland Health Campus in Perth, giving Western Australians the opportunity for better access to healthcare.

The official start of construction for the $360 million hospital campus was marked yesterday (August 8) by health minister Kim Hames with the laying of a concrete foundation stone.

"This is a major part of the reform of WA Health which includes the construction of new and expanded hospitals to meet the state’s future health care needs," the minister said.

The new campus will see the construction of six operating theatres, five birthing suites, two procedure rooms, 48-treatment space Emergency Department, six neonatal cots and a hydrotherapy pool among other facilities.

It may be worth reviewing your current private health insurance or corporate health plan to check that all your medical needs are being covered.

Sometimes insurance plans change and improve, so you may find another that better suits you or your family's needs - so that you can take advantage of good facilities, some of which the new Midland Health Campus may offer.

"This will be the first new hospital in the area for more than 50 years and deliver world-class health care in a modern, purpose-built facility," Dr Hames said.

The campus is expected to be completed in 2015.
