New clinical school opens in private hospital

11 November 2011 - 2:25pm

Australia's largest student training facility in a private hospital was opened in Brisbane yesterday (November 10).

The Greenslopes Clinical School sees collaboration between Greenslopes Private Hospital and The University of Queensland to provide a tertiary hospital with a comprehensive range of inpatient and day services across all major adult specialities.

Greenslopes Private Hospital chief executive officer Mark Page stated the $13 million facility was an ideal setting for a teaching facility - ensuring students have exposure to the health care settings required for their development.

Executive dean for the Faculty of Health Sciences Professor Nicholas Fisk said the clinical school represented a new and valuable link with treating those with private health insurance.

“Integration of this training hub in the heart of a major private hospital offers a range of new opportunities, including enabling students to work closely with other disciplines preparing them for the teamwork that is increasingly important to achieving excellent patient outcomes.”

The hospital currently caters for 35 full time third-year student places - and features an average of 20 fourth-year students in any one rotation - helping to address the KPMG predictions of a shortage of health professionals in Australia over the next 15 years, based on data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
