Healthy friends and family are the key to good living
10 October 2011 - 2:40pm
New research from the Edelman Health Barometer 2011 has identified a link between personal health and wellbeing and that of close friends and family.
Public relations agency Edelman surveyed 15,000 people across 12 countries and discovered that the majority of individuals believe that loved ones have a greater impact - either positive or negative - on their lifestyle and nutrition compared to government.
When asked about the influencing factors on their lifestyle, 43 per cent said that family and friends played a major role - compared to the 20 per cent that cited the government.
Similar results were yielded for nutrition - 36 per cent for family and friends and 20 per cent for government.
When asked about their views on the controlling factors of the healthcare system in their country, 68 per cent claimed that the government had more influence compared with private health insurance companies.
The data raises some interesting points - largely that the behaviour of those we come into contact with regularly have a profound impact on our health habits.
Friends who engage in sporting activities or visit the gym together often turn exercise into a social occasion - extending the benefits.
Families can influence healthy habits such as good eating in the home, by purchasing and cooking nutritious food that the whole house can enjoy.
