Switching Health Funds
Both HICA and the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman recommend you review your health insurance needs at least once a year to make sure the cover you have still fits your circumstances and budget. This is particularly important for those with a progressive condition or ailment, as their health care needs can change significantly over time. Switching health funds and policies is easy with HICA... and can often save families hundreds of dollars per year.
To help protect fund members, Federal legislation now requires health funds to allow “portability” forwhen members switch between Funds. Portability means that members can't be required to serve their waiting periods again when they switch Funds on an equivalent level of cover.
To take advantage of portability, members (or their "new" fund) need to obtain a Transfer Certificate (Clearance Certificate) from the “old” Health Fund and pass that Certificate on to the "new" Fund. The Transfer Certificate confirms the waiting periods that have already been served and the level of cover previously held. The Certificate also confirms the membersstatus and who was covered by the previous membership.
