Health Insurance Rebate

The Federal Government Rebate is available to every health fund contributor/member, whatever their level of cover, income or type of membership providing all people covered by the membership are eligible to claim Medicare benefits.

The level of rebate on a policy is determined by the age of the oldest person covered under the policy and applies to the total premium of the policy. The rebate is worth;

  • 30% for families/couples/individuals who's oldest member is up to the age of 64 years,
  • 35% for families/couples/individuals who's oldest member is aged 65 to 69 years,
  • 40% for families/couples/individuals who's oldest member is aged 70 years or over.

The rebate is applicable to the cost of private health insurance premiums on hospital cover, ancillary cover and a combination of both. It is available irrespective of family type or income.

There is no minimum premium amount. The rebate is available for all health insurance premiums paid to registered health funds.

People can choose to receive the rebate in the method that suits them best. They can receive the rebate as;

  • a premium reduction through their Health Fund
  • a refundable tax rebate in their annual income tax return, or
  • a direct payment available from Medicare offices.

The rebate is provided as a percentage of total premiums and therefore keeps pace with any future increases in individual funds or product premiums.
